Gunmen Kidnap Staff and a Baby from a Nigerian Hospital

As many as eight people, including a one-year-old nurse's baby, have been kidnapped by gunmen from a hospital staff dormitory in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state, police and hospital officials said.

A local police spokesman confirmed that efforts are being made to rescue the kidnapped, who are three nurses and other members of the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Center team.

The gunmen reportedly stormed the building in large numbers, fired on security personnel from a nearby police station and blocked a bridge to prevent any security reinforcements from being directed to the scene of the attack.

The Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted a hospital employee, who asked not to be named, as saying that the exchange of fire was intense, and that the head of the security guard on duty was among the kidnapped.

"The kidnappers are our employees who live in the staff headquarters and some of them were kidnapped with their children," he said.

Kaduna state is witnessing a wave of kidnappings carried out by militants for ransom.
