The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warned against eating raw cake mix, after it was found to be one of the factors behind the outbreak of E. coli bacteria, especially after it was reported that 16 people in 12 US states were infected with the disease, according to CNN. 


Experts at the Centers for Disease Control said that the patients ranged between the ages of two and 73 years, and 75% of them were children under the age of 18, and it was found that one of the most serious complications that followed patients after infection was hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. 

 

The report pointed out that Escherichia coli bacteria secrete severe toxins that result in the destruction of the lining of the small intestine within the digestive system, and lead to bloody diarrhea , as a result of eating or water contaminated with this bacterial infection, especially food and raw and incomplete vegetables.

 

The report revealed that the majority of patients confirmed that they had taken the cake mixture, and DNA fingerprinting was done on bacteria in patient samples to determine the factors of infection, and it was found that some of the infected people may recover without medical treatment.

 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it could also take three to four weeks to determine whether or not a sick person was part of the outbreak. The report identified some of the symptoms that occur to patients, including diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting.

 

The CDC recommends that people not eat raw cake batters and other doughs, because flour and other ingredients can contain harmful bacteria that are only killed during the cooking process.
